How to Use USB Acoustic Guitar This post was written for people who want to learn how to use an acoustic guitar with a sound system. The following equipment is needed:
A laptop or desktop computer that has speakers or headphones
An electric guitar with a 1/4 inch plug
A 1/4 inch male to male cable (for connecting the guitar and the laptop)
An XLR cable (for connecting the microphone to the mixer)
Powered speakers for amplifying sound waves, or headphones for listening.
It is also recommended that one purchase an XLR-USB converter if they do not have access to powered speakers.
A mixers (the mixer will play all of the sounds, either through the speakers or through headphones).
An inexpensive 2 GB 2.5 inch hard disk for storing recordings.
The mixer does not need to be very large, i.e. even a small plastic case mixer like this would work fine.
A microphone (whichever microphone you prefer is fine; it does not really matter).
An inexpensive portable sound recorder for recording your performances; some models can record at 24 bit resolution and store an entire performance. Both can be purchased for about $10 dollars on Amazon.
When connecting the microphone to the mixer, the microphone must be connected to the "phono" side of the mixer. Using a 1/4 inch male to male cable, connect your guitar to the "line out" end of the mixer. If you are using an XLR-USB converter, then connect it to the USB port on your computer. The left speaker must be connected to an audio input on your computer, and by extension, both speakers would be plugged into your printer if you are recording with a laptop.
Acoustic guitar is one of my favorite instruments because of it's simplicity and sing-ability. I also love playing it because I feel like I have the most control over the sound. The acoustic guitar can be amplified with an electric or acoustic amplifier. With an electric amplifier, it puts out a very clean sound at higher volumes. With an acoustic amplifier, it has a warmer, more intimate tone that can be associated with country music styles.
Amplification is achieved by using speakers which play the original sound waves that are heard or produced by an instrument or voice, or through headphones which play the original sound waves through vibrations in air without any speakers.
Sound is produced when a column of air is moved rapidly from side to side; this activity vibrates our eardrums and we hear the result as sound.
The basic components that we need to produce our sound are:
A microphone which is mounted into a mic stand
An acoustic guitar or electric guitar
A mixer
Speakers
The microphone is electrically and mechanically connected to the mixer and amplifies the sound waves by converting them from an analog signal to a digital signal. The mixer is connected to the speakers through the mic, and the speakers amplify the sound of your instrument by converting it from analog to a digital signal. In this setup, your performance will be heard through the speakers. The majority of professional music performers use this setup for recording themselves. If you plan on making recordings on your computer you can use a USB microphone.
